Position Summary

Mesabi Metallics is seeking a Compliance Specialist to ensure that the organization adheres to environmental regulations and best practices, with a particular focus on managing the tailings basin. This role involves monitoring compliance, conducting inspections, and coordinating with regulatory agencies to uphold environmental standards and safety protocols.

Job Responsibilities

Reporting to the Chief Green Officer, the Compliance Specialist will be responsible for the following:

  • Ensure the organization complies with federal, state, and local environmental regulations and standards.
  • Maintain and prepare required documentation and reports for environmental compliance.
  • Conduct regular inspections of facilities and operations to monitor environmental compliance and identify potential issues.
  • Develop and deliver training programs to staff on environmental compliance requirements and best practices.
  • Developing, implementing, and maintaining plans to deal with hazardous materials, wastewater, storm water, and similar environmental risks
  • Serve as a point of contact for environmental compliance issues with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies.
  • Facilitate communication between the organization and regulatory bodies, addressing compliance inquiries and resolving issues.
  • Assist in the preparation and submission of environmental permits and ensure compliance with permit conditions.
  • Conduct internal audits to assess compliance with environmental regulations and company policies.
  • Identify non-compliance issues and recommend corrective actions to address deficiencies and prevent recurrence.
  • Coordinating and collaborating with the working staff and management of Mesabi Metallics to plan, prepare, and develop the environmental sustainability programs and policies for a project.
  • Managing documents, data, and reports in Mesabi's Environmental management system.
  • Assisting in preparing annual reports, documents, and other environmental paperwork to be submitted in accordance with Mesabi Metallics current permits.

Skills and Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of experience in environmental compliance, with experience in air permitting and compliance preferred.
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations and environmental management practices.
  • Proficiency in compliance monitoring and reporting.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical skills.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field.

Physical Requirements

  • This position is a mixture of field work and office duties. Field work will be conducted daily throughout the year so exposure to the elements (rain, snow, cold, heat, etc) is to be expected. The office duties will require work in front of a laptop, desk, and phone.
