Position Summary
The Shift Supervisor – Mine Operations role plays a key leadership role in the safe, efficient, and organized development and operation of our iron ore mine. This hybrid role combines traditional mine shift supervision with dispatch responsibilities, ensuring optimal utilization of equipment, personnel, and resources. Prior to full-scale operations, the Shift Supervisor will actively support mine development activities, including operating equipment as needed, while helping build operational systems, procedures, and workforce readiness. Once operational, the role transitions into coordinating daily production activities, managing shift personnel, and overseeing dispatch functions to meet safety, production, and cost targets.
Job Responsibilities
Reporting to Manager - Mine, the Shift Supervisor - Mine will be responsible for the following:
Pre-Operations:
- Participate in mine development work, which may include operating heavy equipment such as haul trucks, dozers, loaders, or graders as needed
- Support construction, infrastructure installation, pit development, and layout activities
- Assist in establishing mine operating procedures, dispatch protocols, communication standards, and emergency response plans
- Contribute to training plans, competency assessments, and onboarding for new operators and technicians
- Work closely with engineering, maintenance, and project teams to ensure development work aligns with mine design and project schedules
- Identify operational hazards and participate in risk assessments, pre-start-up reviews, and commissioning tasks
Operations:
- Supervise daily mining activities during assigned shift, ensuring compliance with production plans and safety regulations
- Conduct pre-shift meetings, field inspections, and ongoing supervision of production activities
- Ensure compliance with MSHA regulations, company policies, and safe work practices
- Monitor field conditions and adjust work assignments to meet production goals
- Coordinate with maintenance, engineering, and processing to maintain optimum workflow
- Complete shift reports, production summaries, incident notifications, and shift handover documentation
- Serve as the shift dispatcher responsible for managing fleet assignments and optimizing haul cycles as required
- Operate fleet management/dispatch software to monitor equipment locations, performance, and cycle times as required
Skills and Qualifications
- Working knowledge of processing facility operations in the Mining industry including mine operations, safety, maintenance, equipment, and staff utilization.
- Previous supervisory experience.
- Prior experience with dispatch systems
- Strong verbal and written communication skills including the ability to effectively train and mentor employees.
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Comfortable with a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent work ethic, and attendance record.
- Able to work 12-hour shifts
Education
- High School Diploma or GED.
Physical Requirements
- This position requires some work in front of a PC, desk, and phone and regular field work.
- Exposure to loud noise, dust, heavy machinery, and uneven terrain.
- Some lifting and strength are required when working in a plant.
- Must be available to work shifts, weekends, callouts and company mandated overtime.
Salary
- $92,000 - $115,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
