Position Summary
The Mobile Equipment Operator / Mechanic / Electrician is a multi-skilled mining professional responsible for safely operating production and support equipment while performing mechanical and electrical maintenance activities on the mobile mining fleet. This position supports both Mine Operations and Mine Maintenance by maximizing equipment availability, reducing downtime, and maintaining safe, efficient iron ore production. The role is intended to provide operational flexibility by allowing qualified employees to transition between equipment operation and maintenance activities based on production and maintenance priorities.
Job Responsibilities
Reporting to the Maintenance & Operations Shift Supervisor - Mine, the Maintenance/Electrical Hybrid will be responsible for the following:
Mine operations
- Operate heavy mining equipment safely and efficiently to support daily production objectives.
- Perform pre-operational inspections and report equipment defects.
- Maintain haul roads, loading areas, dumps, stockpiles, and pit infrastructure.
- Support ore, waste rock, aggregate, and construction material movement.
- Meet production targets while maintaining safety and environmental compliance.
- Perform preventative maintenance inspections and servicing on mobile equipment.
- Assist with planned maintenance activities and component replacements.
- Complete maintenance work orders and equipment documentation.
- Utilize diagnostic software and electrical schematics.
- Support condition monitoring systems and predictive maintenance technologies.
- Comply with all MSHA, company, and site safety requirements.
- Participate in pre-task risk assessments and workplace examinations.
- Maintain housekeeping standards in equipment and work areas.
- Exercise Stop Work Authority when unsafe conditions exist.
- Identify equipment defects before failure occurs.
- Participate in root cause failure investigations.
- Recommend improvements to operating and maintenance practices.
- Assist in reducing equipment downtime and maintenance costs.
- Troubleshoot and repair mobile equipment electrical systems.

Skills and Qualifications
- Proficiency with hydraulic, pneumatic, and power transmission systems.
- Ability to read and interpret equipment service manuals, hydraulic/electrical schematics, and OEM documentation.
- Valid driver's license; ability to operate equipment.
- Ability to pass MSHA Part 48 new miner training, pre-employment physical, drug screen, and background check.
- Willingness to work rotating 12-hour shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Education
- High school diploma or GED; technical college diploma or certificate in Diesel Technology, Heavy Equipment Technology, or equivalent preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of experience diagnosing and repairing heavy diesel-powered mobile equipment (mining, construction, or industrial).
Physical Requirements
- Frequent heavy lifting, pushing, and pulling of components up to 50 lbs independently; team lifts for components over 50 lbs.
- Ability to work in confined spaces, at heights, in pits, and under raised equipment (with proper blocking and safety protocols).
- Extended standing, kneeling, crouching, and working overhead throughout the shift.
- Ability to work safely in outdoor conditions year-round including extreme cold (−30°F) and heat (100°F+).
Salary Range:
- $38 - $44 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
