Position Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Manager – Tailings to lead the planning, construction oversight, and future operation of our tailings system and tailings basin. This critical leadership role will ensure that all tailings-related infrastructure is constructed safely, complies with regulatory and environmental standards, and is ready to support plant commissioning and long-term operations.

Job Responsibilities
Reporting to the Chief Green Officer, the Manager – Tailings will be responsible for the following:

  • Provide engineering oversight and project management for the design implementation, construction, and pre-commissioning phases of the tailings basin and associated civil infrastructure.
  • Act as the technical liaison between Mesabi Metallics, contractors, regulatory agencies, and engineering consultants for all matters related to tailings management.
  • Monitor construction activities to ensure compliance with design specifications, environmental regulations, permitting conditions, and safety standards.
  • Coordinate geotechnical, hydrological, and civil design updates as site conditions evolve.
  • Develop operational readiness plans, including SOP’s, emergency response plans, and long-term monitoring strategies for the tailings basin.
  • Assist with the recruitment and training of operational staff to manage the tailings basin post-commissioning.
  • Lead risk assessments and implement controls to ensure dam safety and environmental protection.
     

Skills and Qualifications

  • At least 5+ years of experience in mining.
  • Familiarity with Minnesota’s Permit to Mine process and DNR regulatory framework.
  • Knowledge of GISTM standards a plus.
  • Strong technical writing, organization, and project management skills.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams (e.g., engineering, legal, construction)
  • Ability to interpret and apply complex environmental regulations.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Mining, Engineering, or related field.

Physical Requirements

  • This position is a mixture of field work and office duties. Field work will be conducted daily throughout the year so exposure to the elements (rain, snow, cold, heat, etc) is to be expected. The office duties will require work in front of a laptop, desk, and phone. 

Salary

  • $107,000 to $135,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
