Position Summary Mesabi Metallics is seeking a proactive and highly organized HR Intern to work directly with the General Manager – Strategic Human Resources at our Nashwauk, Minnesota site. This is a unique opportunity to sit at the intersection of HR operations and strategic people initiatives at a company building Minnesota's next great mine. The intern will take full ownership of the day-to-day HR operational workload, enabling GM to focus on high-impact strategic priorities. This means running the HR function's operational backbone: from managing documents and employee files to coordinating communications and preparing materials for leadership. Beyond operations, the intern will actively collaborate with specialists across every HR domain i.e. Talent Acquisition, Total Rewards, HR Business Partnering, etc — gaining broad, cross-functional exposure to the full HR function. This role suits someone who takes pride in keeping things running smoothly, handles sensitive information with discretion, and is hungry to understand the "why" behind every HR process they touch.
Job Responsibilities Reporting to the General Manager – Strategic Human Resources, the HR Intern will be responsible for the following: HR Operations & Documentation
Manage and maintain physical and digital employee files, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with records retention requirements
Handle day-to-day HR document processing — printing, scanning, filing, distributing, and tracking correspondence and reports
Maintain and update the HRIS with employee data changes, ensuring records are always current and audit-ready
Coordinate logistical aspects of HR processes such as onboarding documentation, benefits enrollment packets, and policy acknowledgments
Track and follow up on pending HR actions (approvals, signatures, submissions) on behalf of the GM – Strategic HR
Coordination & Communications
Prepare and format HR communications, memos, presentations, and reports for internal stakeholders and leadership
Coordinate scheduling, meeting logistics, and follow-up actions for HR-related meetings, interviews, and training sessions
Serve as the first point of contact for routine employee HR inquiries, triaging and resolving where possible, and escalating appropriately
Support new hire orientation logistics — materials preparation, room/virtual setup, and post-orientation feedback tracking
Strategic HR Support
Assist the GM – Strategic HR in research, benchmarking, and drafting materials for workforce planning, talent strategy, and organizational design projects
Support the development and rollout of HR policies, programs, and initiatives — from concept through execution
Help prepare data summaries, dashboards, and presentations that translate HR metrics into actionable insights for leadership
Participate in strategic HR projects including employee engagement surveys, succession planning support, and culture initiatives
Contribute to building and documenting HR processes and standard operating procedures as the organization scales
Compliance & Audit Support
Assist with HR compliance activities including I-9 verification, mandatory training tracking, and labor law posting requirements
Support internal HR audits by organizing records, preparing documentation, and identifying gaps
Other duties as assigned

Strong organizational skills with attention to detail — you notice what others miss
Ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and tasks simultaneously without dropping the ball
High degree of discretion and professionalism when handling confidential employee information
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Self-starter who takes initiative and follows through without needing to be reminded
Experience with HRIS platforms is a plus
Possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
Education
Currently pursuing a BS or MS in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, Organizational Psychology, or a related discipline from an accredited university
